CHARGE OF MURDER.
v ANOTHER ADJOURNMENT AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, August 28. On the application of Detective-Ser-geant Revell at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Mr. F. W. Stilwell, S.M., granted a further adjournment until September 4 in the case of George Edward James, who is charged with having murdered Cecelia Smith on June 30. Mr. W. E. Leicester, who appeared for the accused, said that when the case was last before the Court it was arranged with the Police Department that to-day and to-morrow would be set aside for the taking of evidence in the Lower Court. Unfortunately there had been a misunderstanding between the Crown Prosecutor, Mr. Macassey, and the Police Department, with the result that Mr. Macassey was unable to proceed to-day. This was the sixth remand in this matter, and he (counsel) had stressed in the beginning that the hands of the defence were tied until the evidence was heard; in the Lower Court. Counsel suggested that some definite date should be fixed for the hearing. Two months had passed since the first had been heard of ihc -alleged offence, and one would have thought there would have been ample time to have finalised the matter.
Mr. Revell said that the inquiries in connection with the matter had entailed quite a lot of work, and the detec-tive-sergeant who had been in charge of them had just completed his file. Mr. Macassey would need several days to go into it.—«(P.A.)
