TOURNAMENT AT GISBORNE. SOME THRILLING GAMES. GISBORNE, August 26. Details of play at the basketball tournament axe:— Southland beat Hawke ’s Bay by the substantial margin of 11 goals. Southland got the lead early in the game, showing superiority almost from, the start. Bay made spasmodic efforts at times but these were I hardly effective and good goal throwing by the Southlanders was responsible for their victory. After an even and exciting game of high standard, Auckland beat Canterbury by three goals; determined attack alternately being met by stubborn defence. In the early stages the scoring was slow r , but later became fast dnd at the end of the first spell, Auckland led by eight to seven. With six minutes to go, the score was equal, 13 all, but the closing stages again saw Auckland superior. In the first grade game, Wellington proved too fast for Otago and thus won the Annie Brown Cup for the runners-up in the first grade competition. The Wellington forwards combined very well and were too clever for the Southerners. In the second grade, two previously unbeaten teams, Poverty Bay and Waikato, .played a fast and even game. At half-time the score was 8 all, but then the Northerners gained and five minutes before time had an unassailable lead. Waikato's win was due entirely to superior goal-shooting, in Which department Poverty Bay failed. The South Canterbury v. Wairarapa match was the most thrilling of the day, the last few minutes being crammed with excitement. With one’ minute to go, Miss Ivez goaled and gnve South Canterbury victory. For the first time in the tourney, the ’South Canterbury centres met their equal, and practically throughout the whole game the battle forged at the centre part of the court. Marlborough, as the result of better combination., had no difficulty in disposing of Manawatu, due largely to better combination and more weight in the centre division. Waikato sustained their initial loss when they were defeated by South and in losing by one goal, 1 „ the second grade champion; ship as Poverty Bay, who were equal yesterday had been already defeated to-day.
