SEVERAL SURPRISES RECORDED YESTERDAY. BUSH BEAT WAIRARAPA. DANNEVIRKE, August 25. As the result of to-day’s series the following teams still remain unbeaten in the Dominion hockey championships: Canterbury, Southland, Otago, and Bush. The surprise of the day waa the Eastern-Marlborough match, which resulted in a draw. Eastern were expected to win. The meeting of Eastern and Bush on Saturday afternoon will have an important bearing on the championship. Another surprise was the defeat of Wellington by Ruahine, who scored an easy victory over the hitherto undefeated Southerners. In Section A Akitio had the most ■■need victory of the day, defeatB by nine goals to nil. had an easy victory over by 5 goals to 1. The winHayed hard hitting hockey, the half-time score being 2 goals to 1. The .Southland-Wairarapa B match was a very hard-fought game. Wairarapa were very aggressive. Southland led by 1 to nin at half-time, Miss E. Bell scoring from a scramble in the circle soon after starting. In the second half Wairarapa went right through, E. Best equalising. Wairarapa pressed hard but the Southland forwards came with a great rush for Miss L. Heaps to goal. In Section B, Ruahine A sprang a surprise by defeating Wellington, hitherto unbeaten, in a very fast contest.

The first spell ended in favour of Ruahine by 2 goals to nil. In the second half Ruahine had the upper hand, playing with fine combination. Wellington’s defence was weak.

Feilding disposed of Ashburton by 2 goals to 1, there being no score in the first spell, while the second spell was much more lively. Otago registered an easy win over Wanganui by seven goals to nil. The score indicates the merits of the teams. Otago excelled in combination and stick work.

In Section C, Marlborough caused a surprise by fully extending the cup holders, Eastern, playing a drawn game, one all. Eastern did not field l the strongest side, playing four emer-' gencies. The first spell was very sternly contested, no score being recorded. Eastern found the Marlborough defence very sound. The Eastern forwards did not show their usual combination, many movements breaking down and chances going begging. The Marlborough rearguard, especially the full-backs, Misses W. and M. Woolley were outstanding. Marlborough opened the scoring in the second half with a very fine solo effort by Miss R. Drake, the centre-forward, wht> burst past the Eastern full-backs to score half-way through the spell. Shortly after Eastern equalised with strong work by Misses White, Reid and McBain, the last-named scoring. Eastern held a territorial advantage but could not break the rock-like defence of the Marlborough rearguard. In the Manawatu-Taranaki game the former were most aggressive and. persistent in attack, but. Jacked combination. On the afternoon’s play Taran-

aki were the better team, sound in defence and playing better hockey, but they failed to finish off their movements.

Bush maintained their unbeaten record by defeating A by 3 goals to 2. The winners were much better in play generally. Wairarapa came with a late run and scored a couple of goals in the concluding stages. The scorers were, Bush, Miss D. Lett (2) and M. Bailey; Wairarapa, Mrs. Te Tau and Miss Playle.—«(P.A.)
