PING PONG.

MASTERTON WINTER SPORTS CLUB. REVIEW OF YEAR’S WORK. The annual report of the Masterton Winter Sports Club, which, will Be presented at the annual meeting to be held in the Y.M.CkA. on Monday at 7.30 p.m. states: — “In reviewing the (past season your committee has much pleasure in presenting the tenth annual report of the club's activities. There is no doubt that the popularity of ping pong has grown in recent years, several new town and country clubs being formed during 1932. Our numbers have consequently fallen, but a high standard of play and constant enthusiasm has been displayed iby all our members. Moreover, the season has been a particularly full one, when it is considered that more inter-club matches, and matches with representatives from Wellington, Manawatu and country districts have been played than in any previous season. Add to this the share of promoting and running a monster provincial ping pong tournament for the Mayor's Distress Fund, and it will be realised how wide have been our activities.

INTER-CLUB MATCHES. “In the contests with the local clubs —Kopuaranga, Mauriceville, Wangaehu, United, Clareville, and Catholic — we managed to escape defeat, and. we take this opportunity of thanking our opponents for some very interesting matches and for their hospitality to us when visiting their clubs. Wo were favoured with visits from teams representing the Government Insurance and Government Printing Offices, Wellington, and the visit of . a strong ’representative team from Manawatu. These contests were very exciting and produced some excellent ping pong. , Through the kindness of Messrs G. Masters, G. Beecroft and G. W. Morice, to whom we express our gratitude, we were able to visit Wellington to play return matches and take part in the Wellington provincial championships. These trips proved most enjoyable and. we are much indebted to the above gentlemen for providing car transport. CLUB EVENINGS. z *Our programme during club evenings was notable for variety—several types of competition being utilised in the following list of activities: Ping pong ladder games; trophy competitions in ping pong and quoits; and championship ping pong and quoits. Progressive ping pong and skipping competitions caused much fun. Trophies donated by Messrs. A. A. Wilson, H. Jacob, J. Ninnes, A. J. Daysh, T. Ihaka, A. Newlands and P. Southey were won by the following members: Misses C. McKenzie, P. Harvey, M. Bright and Messrs. M. Winslade, E. G. Frost and H. B. Massey. To those w’ho carried off championship honours we extend our warm congratulations. These were: Ping pong, ladies’ singles, Miss M. Bright; men’s singles, Mr. H. B. Massey; ladies’ doubles, Misses M. and B. Bright; men’s doubles, Messrs. J. Nicholls ■and M. Winslade; combined doubles, Miss M. Bright and M. Winslade. In the ping pong singles championships, both Miss M. Bright and Mr H. B. Massey have been successful for two consecutive seasons so that interest- should be very keen this year as three consecutive wins will entitle these players to possess the championship cups. 1 BENEFIT TOURNEY.

Perhaps the most gratifying feature of our Irtst season’s programme was the successful ping pong tournament held in the Municipal Hall for the purpose of raising money for the Mayor’s Distress Fund. With the enthusiastic support of other local and country clubs, and some business men and women of the town, we were able to augment the Distress Fund to the extent of £22 15s Bd. Over 250' competitors participated— quite the largest tourney of its kind ever held in New .Zealand—and we were particularly pleased with the spirit of co-operative effort that was displayed iby all who helped to make this function a grand .financial and social success. Our sin--2® res t thanks are due in particular to the Mayoress (Mrs. Jordan) for her presence and for her kind action in opening the tournament. We look forward to a similar gathering during the coming season.

Last season su> ’riptions were redueed and we are ; ased to note by the club's balance s.-.'ot, that, our financial position is sovnd, the credit bal“n®e,fo,r R ooming season being £1 4s fid. Quite a large share of the social success of the club is due to- the untiring work of the ladies who are in charge of supper preparations each evening, to the committee members for their organisation work, and to all members for their loyal support. We thank all for their work and for their interest in the club. We wish to express gratitude also to the donors of tiophies, to the Press for liberal space in their columns, to the Y.M.C.A. for the use of their rooms, and to the Mayor for his presence at our closing trophies.’ at WhiCh he prescnted the
