INFORMATION SOUGHT.

ARREST OF BRITISH EXPERTS IN RUSSIA. REPRESENTATIONS TO SOVIET BY AMBASSADOR. NO PARTICULARS OF SPECIFIC CHARGE:. LONDON, March 14. No satisfactory reply to the representations of Sir Esmond Ovey, British Ambassador in Moscow to the Soviet, has yet been received. London has not been informed of the specific charge against the arrested men apart from the general reference to sabotage. The Embassy will be permitted to visit the prisoners in the presence of Soviet officials provided that no reference is made to the affair. ’ Sir Esmond Ovey is continuing his urgent inquiries and is likely strongly to protest if the Soviet further withholds precise information. The Einbassy has not even been advised where the four unreleased men are imprisoned. They have been given no facilities to prepare a defence. PRISONERS VISITED. MR. MONKHOUSE’S DETENTION. (Received Wednesday, 7 pan.) LONDON, March 15.' It is understood that Sir Esmond Ovey made strong representations to Moscow about the secretiveness of proceedings against Vickers’ employees and stated that the Government was taking a serious view of the case. The Soviet Foreign Office then said that members of the Embassy would be allowed to' visit the prisoners, subject to representatives of the Soviet being present and no reference being made to the motives of the arrest. Sir Esmond Ovey visited Lubianka Gaol and conferred with the four prisoners. He found them comfortable and in normal health.

Mr. Monlfhouse, who has been released, said that he was questioned during the greater part of his 48 hours’ detention. No reference was made to espionage. The questions chiefly related to alleged defects in the machinery, supposedly faulty installation. Mr.‘Monkhouse says that naturally, during ten years ’ installing equipment in large power stations there had been troubles which were unavoidable in any big job, but the charges of sabotage were ridiculous.
