SELF HELP CLUB.

(To the Editor.) ‘ Sir, —Kindly allow me to compliment, you on your sub-leader in this morning’s issue re the Self Help Club. It would be well if the club members were to take the advice offered. Seeing that the local Unemployed Self Hein Club is open to all adults who register at the local Labour Bureau as unemployed, and pay the small sum of sixpence a month, which entitles them to the privileges of the club, I am surprised at tho action of the chairman in allowing such a resolution to be accepted. Maybe Mr Judd for the moment forgot the fact that the club is open to all local registered unemployed and is non-politicul, non-sectarian and non-partisan, and that each and every member has equality of privileges according to his rights. That the acceptance of such a resolution has lowered the prestige of the club goes without saying. Unfortunately, this is not the only action of Mr. Duley and his party that has doi e harm to the local unemployed and to the club. Mr. Duley’s statement that he was “merely endeavouring to safeguard the interests of the club” is rank eyewash. It has been freely stated round the town that Mr.. Duley was going to prevent free labourers from joining the club. It is well that there are sane and modest members who are morally courageous enough to stand up and fight pernicious actions of this nature, otherwise I venture to say that the Self Help Club would soon be where Mr. Duley and his party would apparently have it go, and go it would, without a doubt, and that to the detriment of local unemployed members and their families.

The club has done splendid work in the past, and may it continue to do so while this ghastly depression and its attendant evils remains with us, but to be successful all must pull together for the common good and party feuds must be kept out of the question altogether Thanking you for granting me so much space in your valued paper — I am, etc.,

, P- H. SHAW. Masterton, March 15.
