THE OIL DISPUTE.

BRITAIN WANTS AMICABLE SETTLEMENT. LONG MEMORANDUM GIVEN TO LEAGUE. ALLEGATIONS BY PERSIA. GENEVA, December 19. Reaffirming the desire for an amicable fair agreement In the Anglo-Persian oil dispute, the British Government has submitted a long memorandum to the League of Nations denying the charge that Britain has impeded agreement. The Government contends that there should have been resort to arbitration under Article Seventeen of the agreement. “As Persia has already decided to notify the Council of Britain’s intimidating, almost threatening attitude to Persia, we have no objection to the matter being laid before the Council,” states a Persian memorandum presented to the Council. It adds: “There is no reason for urgency because Persia does not intend taking measures against the Anglo-Persian Company, pending agreement.” NO WARSHIPS SENT. LONDON, December 19. In the House of Commons, the First Lord of the Admiralty (Sir Bolton Eyres-Mbnsell) said that no warship had been sent to Persian waters to protect the Anglo-Persian Oil Company’s interests. CONFIDENCE IN PEACE. GENEVA, December 19. Mr. Sean Lester, presiding over the League Council in the absence of Mr. de Valera, telegraphed to the British and Persian Governments declaring confidence in both to refrain from aggravating thc oil dispute pending settlement.
