SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. MABTINBOBOUGH. (“The Age” Special.) The dux of the School medals were awarded to Beryl Pike, Secondary Department, and Duncan Tilfer, Primary. Twenty-eight pupils at the local school were successful in passing the Proficiency test. • The final dance and euchre party of the season was held by the local Self Help Club in the Parish Hall on Thursday night. The Regal Dane* Band was responsible for the musie. Euchre prizes were won by Mrs Farflitt 1, and Mrs Mclntosh 2, and Mr. J. Quinn, 1; Mr. McNally, 2; and the aggregate prizes by Mrs Marflitt and Mr. P. Flynn. A consolation prize donated by Mrs Quinn was won by Mrs Braithwaite.
On Friday afternoon the pupils of Miss Trotman were entertained at tea in the Parish Hall. During the afternoon the pupils presented Miss Trotman with a crystal vase in recognition of her untiring efforts on their I ..half. Miss S. Yratcr, of the office stj-ff of the W.F.C.A., was on Saturday presented with a hat case and hand big by the staff. Miss Frater who has been in the Martinborough office for four years has been transferred to Carterton. Mrs Ferris Dale, with her two sons is visiting her mother Mrs Greenland, Westport. Mrs Dale, Snr., Miss Dale and Mr. F. Dale leave for Fordell this week to visit Mr. and Mrs D. Dale. Mr. and Mrs C. McAllum and Miss McAllum returned last week from Eastbourne where they had been for some weeks.
Miss Betty Ward who has been the guest of Mrs F. E. Fleury is now with her parents at Lower Hutt. Mr. and Mrs Wenstrom (Island Bay) who have been visiting friends in Martinborough returned to their home on Monday. Miss Florence Webb was a visitor to Marton for the Nga Tawa School prize giving. Mrs H. Blundell has retnrned from a short visit to Havelock North. A special meeting of the local Self Help Club was held recently, when it was decided to reorganise the flub, The following officers were elected:— Chairman, Mr. F. Arkle; treasurer, Me. Albert Smith; secretary, Mr. G. Welby; committee, Messrs Hibberd, A. Mo Cardie, Wilton and W. Shore. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring chairman and committee.
On Friday afternoon members of tho Martinborough Women's Institute paid a visit to the Buchanan Home, Greytown, and provided afternoon tea for the inmates. Each old lady was given a bed jacket. These jackets were made by Institute members and were padded with fleece wool, washed and carded and though of ample size, the amount of wool in each jacket only weighed about four ounces. MAURICEVILLE. (“The Age” Special.) The formal opening of the new asphalt courts and the croquet court will take place on Boxing Day, when a large gathering is expected. A dance will be held in the evening, for which elaborate preparations hve been made. Refreshments will be provided. There are abundant crops of hay throughout the district and the weathar, is excellent for harvesting work, which is progressing with all haste.
