RESCUE AT SUMNER.
WOMEN BATHER IN DIFFICULTIES. CHRISTCHURCH, December 19. Owing to a strong current, several bathers got into difficulties at Sumner yesterday, and in one case there was a thrilling rescue. Mrs Fox and Miss Peggy Fisher were swimming together and were some distance from the beach, when Miss Fisher saw that Mrs Fox was almost exhausted. Miss Fisher 'supported her for a time and then called to Mr. J. E. Archer, who was not far away. Mr. Archer swam over, and while ho held up Mrs Fox Miss Fisher set out for the shore to bring help. The Surf Club team dashed in and eventually brought Mrs Fox cut, but only after the beltman and the woman ha<i been badly buffeted by the surf at the end of 400 yards of line. They were frequently submerged.—(P.A.)
