HAWERA MAKES MERRY.
.JUBILEE BEACON LIT. HAWERA, December 10. The carnival spirit reigned at Hawera on Saturday when several thousands thronged the street for the open air concerts and fancy dress dancing, which continued from 9.30 p.m. till midnight, ’ on the occasion of the switching-on of the jubilee beacon installed to commemorate the borough jubilee on February last. The beacon is formed by lights round the top of the water-town, 166 feet above the ground, and is said to be New Zealand’s highest sky sign. It will show each night from sunset to 2 a.m., and will be visible over a wide area. It has been charted by the Marine Department.
