STEAMER ON FIRE.
HEAVY TASK FOR SYDNEY BRIGADES. OUTBREAK AMONGST COPRA CARGO. DAMAGE AMOUNTS TO £5OOO. (Received Sunday, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 18. A fire in the No. 1 hold of the steamer Taronga, of 6700 tons, loading wool at Pyrmont yesterday afternoon, required the efforts of 120 firemen till evening before it was controlled. The outbreak occurred among copra loaded at Rabaul, which burned fiercely. The brigades and two fire floats poured large quantities of water into the hold and the ship developed such a list that the fire floats had to <begui pumping water out of one side while the fire fighters continued on the other side. The damage amounted to £-5000. SHIP NOT DAMAGED. (Received This Day, 0.47 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 18. The Taronga was not structurally damaged and is expected to proceed on her voyage on Tuesday, according to schedule.
