POSTAGE STAMPS.
ADDRESS BY MR. CLEMAS.
A keen philatelist, and an authority on the subject, Mr. A. C. Clemas, in an interesting and instructive address at the Optimist Club luncheon yesterday, sketched the history of the postage stamps, and also referred briefly to many rare and historical specimens. Mr. Clemas outlined the post office routine and the methods of distribution end collection of revenue in vogue up to the time of Sir Rowland Hill, the author of penny postage, which came into force in England on January 10, 1840. He also touched on some of the details connected with Rowland Hill’s campaign for the introduction of the penny rate- of postage. After dealing with details of the postage stamp as it was known to-day, Mr. Clemas touched on the interesting hobby of stamp collecting. In this connection he exhibited a specialised collection of New Zealand stamps, which proved of great interest to members of the club. At the conclusion of his address, Mr. Clemas was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for his address.
