MINE TRAGEDY.
VERDICT OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH. DUE TO G|AS POISONING. WESTPORT, July 5. An inquest touching the deaths of William Lowden and Joseph Edward Pfeffer in the Millerton Mine on June 11, 1932, was held at Millerton to-day by Mr. E. R. Fox, Coroner. Lengthy evidence was heard. Dr. Hooper, who examined the bodies stated that both deeeased had died from gas poisoning. Death had occurred probably within a few minutes after they had entered the stopping. The appearance of the bodies was consistent with poisoning from hydrogen sulphide, an extremely dangerous gas. The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death, due to hydrogen sulphide gas, Pfeffer meeting his death while endeavouring to recover the body of Lowden.—(P.A.)
