WORK FOR PRIVATE PROFIT. FARM IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES. “That this meeting of relief workers condemns the action taken by the Masterton County Council in trying to force men ‘over the fence,' free of wages cost to the farmers and that all farm schemes be declared black where the work is done for private profit.” The foregoing was a resolution carried unanimously at a largely attended meeting of Masterton relief workers last night. The question of farm work which was not subsidised by the farmer came in for some pointed criticism in the course of a brief discussion. “I think we should turn the whole thing down flat," observed Mr. Monro, “and let the Government feed us. If they are going to give the dole to the farmer let them give it to relief workers too. We don't want charity, we want work, but if they can't find us work then let them feed us." (Cheers and cries of hear, hear). <r Can we accept work if the farmer adequately subsidises the wages?” askedi a member.
“Yes, certainly,” replied the chairman (Mr. K. Judd).
