PING PONG.

MASTERTON v. WELLINGTON. MATCH ON SATURDAY. What is now established as an annual fixture took place on Saturday evening, when the Masterton Winter Sports Club met a team representing the Government Printing Office. On arrival the visitors were entertained at tea and welcomed by thp president, Mr. H. B. Massey. An early start was made with the match and, play continued until 11.45 p.m. The local club proved superior, winning by 44 matches to 17. The are the section results, Wellington scores mentioned first:—Ladies’ singles, 5/11; men’s singles, 8/24; ladies’ doubles, 1/1; men’s doubles, 1/3; combined doubles, 2/5. Games of particular interest were those between K. Longmore (Wellington) v. B. Massey (Masterton) and C. Cheal (Wellington) v. M. Winslade (Masterton). Longmore defeated Massey in the third set, 31/17, after a brilliant game of driving and smashing. M. Winslade lost to Cheal in the third set, 31/25, after a long and hard fought game, in which Cheal’s superior driving won him the mat’cli. During the evening a very enjoyable supper was provided by the ladies’ committee. Next Saturday evening the club will hold a Yankee Handicap Singles tournament in two sections, for trophies kindly donated by Messrs. A. J. Daysh ti.d H. Jacobs. UNITED CLUB. There was a large gathering of young people at the Methodist Hall on Saturday for the United Club’s weekly winter sports evening. Several sets cf ping pong, both doubles and singles, were played. The players are showing much improvement. Other games beside ping pong were entered into with enthusiasm. A tasty supper was served by the ladies’ committee.
