HIGHWAYS RAID.

MASTEBTON COUNTY COUNCIL VIEWS. GOVERNMENT ACTION ROUNDLY CRITICISED. Pointed criticism of the Government’s policy of raiding the Main Highways Board funds was heard at yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council from the chairman, Councillor W. I. Armstrong. The matter arose when the North Island Motor Union forwarded a copy of a statement concerning the diversion of motor taxation from the Main Highways Board. Observing that it was an important matter, the chairman said that it seemed to him that the Prime Minister thought that there were far stronger claims to consideration in the country than reading costs. They would have to try and put a stop to the Government making any more raids on the Highways funds. It was up to the Masterton County and every other county to put their foot down and do their best to stop any more raids —. A councillor: “And get back some of the money we have lost.’’ Councillor H. H. Mawley said it seemed that local bodies were gradually being left to And the whole of reading costs. “Yes, that is what it seems to be coming to,’’ commented a councillor It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Armstrong, that in the event of any further diversion of the Highways funds by the Government, a strong protest be entered by the eounty. It was also considered that representations should be made to have the money already taken handed back.
