WAIRARAPA RACES.

AUTUMN MEETING OPENED IN FINE WEATHER. WHITE FANG WINS EASTER HANDICAP. MANY KEENLY CONTESTED EVENTS. Ideal weafner prevailed yesterday for the opening day of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s autumn meeting on the Tauherenikau Racecourse. The track was in good order and there was a large attendance of the public, who were treated to some splendid racing. The totalisator investments showed a decrease of £6987 10s compared with the opening day (Saturday) of last year, the total for the day being £16,078 10s, against £23,066 10s. The first two races of the day. the Newmarket Handicap and the Ferry Hack, were both won in convincing style by Tenterden and Ephialtes respectively. J. Green, rider of Tenterden, put up a creditable performance, as this was his first mount at a race meeting. Ephialtes scored his first win since his sensational victory at the Carterton meeting last year, when his dividend ran into five centuries. The big event of the day, the Easter Handicap, provided a stirring contest from start to finish, Mr. W. C. Griffith’s White Fang winning by a head from the Wairarapa owned Stanchion. The Wairarapa Nursery Handicap was also keenly fought out, the first three horses racing to the post almost abreast, Movietone securing the verdict to return one of the biggest dividends of the day. The Tuhitarata Hack concluded with a stirring battle between the three placed horses, Courtlike, after being left somewhat at the start, being well handled to win by a head. Lineage left no doubt as to her superiority in the Martinborough Handicap, winning with her ears pricked. She was the first favourite of the day to win. False Scent, making his second appearance of the day in the Mokai Hack, returned his supporters a good dividend when he won this event, after being ridden right out. The final event, the Maiden Hack, saw Martian Chief score his first win, beating the well-fancied Joie de Vai by half a length in a good finish. The. stewards held an inquiry into the running of Baskier in the second race and warned the rider, S. Ridgeway, to be more careful in future when riding horses with a tendency to bore out. - Following are the detailed results:— * AN EASY WIN. Newmarket Handicap, of 175sovs; 6f. 3, Mrs. C. Elgar’s b g Tenterden (Chief Ruler —Rosellate), car. 7.9 (J. Green) 1 2, Mr. R. Johnson ’s ch g Ridgemount (Leighton — Lallah Rookh), car. 8.6 (R. Drinkwater) 2 1, Mr. H. T. With Reremoana scratched, only four runners faced the starter, Portray and Ridgemount being most fancied. From a moderate start, Portray moved off in front, followed by Hunting Call and Tenterden, with Ridgemount slightly in the roar. Before entering the straight Tenterden ran to the front and from then on the race was a procession, the locally-owned horse winning in hollow fashion by half a dozen lengths, Ridgemount beating Portray for second money by half a length, with Hunting Call last. The winner gave nothing else a chance. (Continued on Page 3.) TO-DAY’S ACCEPTANCES. Kozan led off from the bunch, but Baskier assumed the lead racing along the road bend. Entering the straight Baskier was going well, with Kozan and Ephialtes" putting in their claims. Ephialtes, however, drew away to win somewhat easily from Kozan, with Leyland third and Baskier fourth. A STIRRING CONTEST. Easter Handicap; of 400sovs; IJm. 3, Mr. W. C.
