COMPENSATION CLAIM.
LAND TAKEN EOR RAILWAY DEVIATION. ASSESSORS AWARD £670. PALMERSTON N„ Nov. 4. The assessors at the Supremo Court yesterday awarded Henry Walter George Ashworth £670 compensation in respect to six acres taken for the railway deviation in 1926 by a proclamation which was revoked in 1929 when the Government decided that the work should not be continued. The land was handed back to the plaintiff with an excavation across, a portion of the fencing removed, and the shelter trees cut down. It was declared by the plaintiff and his witnesses that the excavated portion was useless for farming and that its presence depreciated the whole property. The claim was for £1149. The Department ’s counsel intimated that several other compensation cases had been Settled privately.—(P.A.)
