THE EARL OF BIRKENHEAD;

(Received This Day, 1.10 a.m.) LONDON,/September 30. Obituary.—The Eart-ef Birkenhead. (The Earl of Birkenhead, formerly Mr. F. E. Smith, was 'born at Birkenhead in July, 1872. He had a distinguished scholastic, legal and political career. From 1915, when he became Solicitor-General, onwards, he hold various Ministerial offices in Great Britain. He held office in the War Cabinet throughout a considerable part of the tfar period, having previously seen active service witji the Indian Corps in prance. He was Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain from 1919, the year in which he Was raised to the Peerage, to 1922. Apart from legal and political publications, Lord Birkenhead was the author of a number of volumes of a more popular kind. From an early stage in his career, when he was known as “Galloper Smith," he was regarded as one of the most intellectually brilliant members of the Conservative Party. His heir is his only son, Viscount Furneaux.)
