END OF ADVENTUROUS CAREER. DEATH OF NOTED CONTRACTOR AND SOLDIER. OUTSTANDING WAR SERVICE. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, September 27. Obituary.—At Cairo, LieutenantColonel Sir John Norton Griffiths, public works contractor, aged. 59, though most famous for blowing up Messines Ridge and destroying Roumanian oil wells. Sir John Norton Griffiths lived a most adventurous life. He sailed for Australia in a wind-jammer, when 17. He ran away from the ship and remained some time in Australia. He earned the name of “ Empire Jack” for work done during the war. The London manager of the flrm this morning received a cable from Sir John Griffiths reporting the state of certain negotiations, but received no hint that there was anything untoward.
