COMMISSIONER OF POLICE THREATENED. BOMBS THROWN IN CROWDED STREET. > ONE ASSASSIN BLOWN UP. (Received Monday, 9.25 p.m.) DELHI, August 25. Two bombs were thrown at the Commissioner of Police in a crowded thoroughfare of Calcutta. A shot was fired at one assassin, who blew himself up. There are . no details. SERIOUS POSITION. . A serious 'situation is reported in the Betul district, Central Provinces, where the police, attempting to arrest Cajau, a member of a practically aboriginal tribe ealjed the Gonds for a breach of the forest laws, found their man surrounded by several hundred Gonds. Several police were injured. The police fired, temporarily dispersing the Gonds, of whom one was killed. The Gonds are reassembling in 'large numbers. Fifty armed police have been despatched from Nagpur. The bombs were flung at the car of Sir Charles Tcgart, Police Commissioner, as he was driving in Dalhou'sie Square, the centre of the European business quarter of Calcutta, at eleven, o ’clock in the morning. Sir Charles Teghrt was unhurt but the driver was wounded. The second assailant was killed, apparently by the premature burstin of a bomb in his hand. Sir Charles leapt from the car and chased one assailant; who was subsequently He was carrying two other fb'dmbs. Dalhousic Square is the bumeet shopping centre. The four assailants wert Bengali of the student class, about 25 years old. One is dead, one wounded and perhaps dead and remaining two have been arrested. The incident is causing ’ great excitement among Europeans. Little business is being done.
