Presiding over an Ibsen lecture and discussion at the W.E.A. meeting last evening, Mr. J. Mulvey got himself into hot water when he professed to find in the ideas of Ibsen, as he had just heard them expounded, an explanation of the facilities for divorce provided in these modern days. He cited the example of an American lady who had been divorced five times before 4he was thirty. Mrs T. R. Barrer took the- chairman promptly to task. In her reading of Ibsen, she said, she found no encouragement for numerous divorces. Wherever the dramatist had established the case of a woman obliged to leave her home and perhaps her children, it was always because she found it impossible otherwise to be true to some ideal. Ibsen’s women were loyal to their husbands in all eases in which loyalty was called for. No warrant was to be found in Ibsen for a ease like that of the woman who had five divorces. Mr. Mulvey jestingly excused himself by declaring that the lecturer had misled him. The lecturer (Mr. J. A. Brailsford) closed the incident neatly by apologising to Mr. Mulvey for misleading him and thanking Mrs Barrer for putting Mr. Mulvey right. Capable general wanted. American organ for sale.
