DANNEVIRKE SCORE WIN OVER WAIRARAPA. GOOD GAME IN THE MUD. Playing on the Carrington Park, Carterton, yesterday afternoon, the Dannevirke hockey representatives defeated Wairarapa by three goals to one. Despite the wretched weather conditions, a really good exhibition of the code was given by both sides. Territorially, Wairarapa had the better of play, and only bad shooting lost them the game.

The teams lined out as follow: — Dannevirke (Red and Grey).—Chapman, Hewitt, Foreman (capt.), Thompson, Berrett, O'Brien, D. Tolmie, H. Tolmie, Erickson, R. Armstrong, J. Smith. Wairarapa (Green). —Smith, M. J. Hanley, Ngature, McDonald, Massey, Melville, Bannin, Peterson, Desforges, Peterson, Williamson. Wairarapa won the toss and played with the wind. From the bully-off, the visitors set up a hot attack and had Wairarapa in trouble, but a free hit relieved. Dannevirke continued to attack, but good work by Hanley and Melville saved a goal. Wairarapa I livened up a bit now and took play to Roil territory, where Goodin had a shot, but missed. McDonald .and Melville were putting in some great work for the home side. The former sent his forwards away nicely, but the shot at goal went wide. Dannevirke were next to attack, a pretty piece of play ending in Tolmie finding the net with a good shot. Dannevirke, 1/0. Dannevirke went straight tlreengh again from the bully-off and Smith put them further in the lead with a good shot. Dannevirke, 2/0. Dannevirke continued to do the attacking and Smith, the Wairarapa goalie, was called on two or three times in quick succession to save his side. Play hovered in midfield for a time, till Desforges made a good breakaway for Wairarapa, and sent in a hot one to open Wairarapa's account. Wairarapa now livened up and played great hockey. The forwards, however, let the team down by shockingly bad shooting. At half-time the score was 2/1 in favour of the visitors. Dannevirke attacked on resuming, but the effort was short-lived, as Wairarapa were playing well, especially the backs. This half_ was very fast and exciting, both sides doing some great work. Wairarapa, however, were doing most of the attacking now, but bad shooting lost them several good chances, the forwards bunching far too much. Dannevirke, on the other hand, were combining well and were always dangerous on attack. Their third goal was a beauty, in which all the forwards had a hand, Smith finally finishing off a fine piece of work by finding the net. Dannevirke, 3/1. Wairarapa continued to attack and though they shot from all angles could not get one past the goalie. The game ended with Dannevirke winners by 3 to I. Messrs. Schmitz (Dannevirke) and Jaquery (Wairarapa) were in charge of the game. For Wairarapa, the honours of the game were with the backs. They were really good to have kept a hot forward line like the visitors at bay. Hanley was right up to form and played his best game to date. The halves, however, were the pick of the side. Melville played a ripping game and was easily the best back on the ground. Massey and McDonald, too, stood out well. The forwards were weak on the day’s play, especially when in the circle. Goodin missed several good opportunities to goal. Desforges, too, did not show his usual brilianey in the circle. Their'combination was also weak. For the visitors, Chapman, in goal, was a beauty, some of his saves being wonderful. Foreman was also very smart. The Dannevirke halves were outplayed by the Wairarapa halves, but they made amends in the forwards. They were pretty to watch, their combined movements being at times nerfect. After the game, the visitors were the guests of the Wairarapa Hockey Association at a dinner at which the usual toasts were honoured. The Dannevirke team returned home last evening by motor.
