The Australian hockey team defeated Thames-Hauraki by seven goals to nil, at Thames yesterday.—(P.A.) A n additional donation to the Mayor of Masterton’s Earthquake Relief Fund is an amount of £2 2s from Miss Ann Sinclair. Mr. J. L. Hughes asked at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust what had been done regarding a recommendation made to a committee to report on a proposal to set up a sinking fund for the replacement of old Trust buildings. It was stated in reply that the committee had not yet considered the matter. John Little, a single man, 52 years of age, who did not appear, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court at Masterton yesterday morning with obstructing Constable R. J. Wilson, in the execution of his duty, at Tinui, on August 7. Mr. T. Jordan, J J?., was on the bench. The police evidence, and that of a civilian witness, disclosed that the constable had arrested a man for drunkenness on the date set out in the charge, and accused interfered at the police station. Little was convicted and fined £5, and ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses of £1 10s, in default .14 days’ imprisonment.

An application was made by the Masterton Beautifying Society to the Trust Lands Trust some time ago for a grant and at last night’s meeting of the Trust Mr. G. Selby asked if the matter had been considered. It was stated, in reply, that the application had been struck out by the Finance Committee, as the balance sheet of the society showed it to be in a healthy position. On the motion of Mr. Selby it was decided to write to the Beautifying Society, congratulating it on its financial position and stating that the Trust did not propose to make a grant this year. All details in connection with the Cfluanty Dance which takes place in the Masterton Municipal Hall to-morrow night are now complete. In anticipalion of a large attendance the committee has made arrangements for a proper system of cloakroom tickets in duplicate. Another innovation that will be appreciated will be the playing of all supper extras by the orchestra. A system of relays will make this postible without unduly taxing the musicians. The difficulty of handling the large crowd which is expected at supper w’.ll be overcome by the simple expedient of an early start. Dancing is timed to commence at 7.15 p.m.. The cause ?s a worthy one and should commend itself to all dancers but the committee rely mostly on the excellence of the arrangements made to attract patrons. Young lad wanted. Smart boy wanted.
