The Dannevirke men’s hockey representatives, who won the Norden Cup from Wairarapa in 1927, and successfully defended in succeeding seasons, played yesterday the first challenge match of the season against Taranaki. The game ended in a draw—one goal each. Taranaki commenced very strongly, and had the better of the play in the first quarter of an hour. Then the holders began to improve. With 20 minutes gone, K. Pennington sent a hot shot into the net for the challengers, and three minutes before the spell ended, J. Smith scored for Dannevirke. The second half was stubbornly contested, Dannevirke being almost continuously on the attack until the conceding stages, when Taranaki organised several dangerous rushes without •soring. The game was a good exhibition on a dead ground.—(P.A.)
