The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s fixtures for to-morrow are as advertised on Wednesday last. In the senior grade, Red Star are to play Gladstone at Carterton, and Carterton will play Greytown, at Greytown. Old Boys will meet Masterton at Memorial Park.

The German cruiser Emden, an Auckland Press Association* message states, sailed for Wellington at six o’clock last evening. Capt. Von Arnauld gave a luncheon on the ship yesterday and afterwards a reception was held.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday next at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Tinui. In the afternoon at 3 o’clock a Thanksgiving Service for the recovery of the King will be# held in the Tinui Hall. There will be a collection for the O&stlepoint County Council Earthquake Relief Fund.

At a preliminary meeting of the Charity Dance Committee it was decided to hold this season’s function on August 10, the evening of the Auck-land-Wai rarapa Rugby match. The Masterton Municipal Hall has been

pencilled for this date and an. effort is being made to strengthen the committee with the intention of making this year’s function an even greater success than the one last year. An elective campaign against eels was conducted in the South Wairarapa during the past season. The Wellington Acclimatisation Society gave prizes for the greatest number of eels taken in this reason, and elao for the heaviest eel. The prizes were secured by Ray Barlow, Carterton, with 823 eels, and J. E. Cooley, Parkvale, with the heaviest eel of lOJlbs. There were also caught thirteen large eeds,' which weighed from 15 to 19jlbs., two of them having trout in their stomachs. However, eels are still very numerous in the creeks and rivers. A number of brown fry were distributed in South Wairarapa rivers last year, 115,000 being allocated. The fishing season, however, was not a good one on the whole. Unfortunately the Maungatarere stream went dry in the upper reaches and a number of fish were lost. > Perch were again caught in large numbers, some fine fish having been secured in the lower reaches of the Ruamahanga river. Perch are now found in nearly all the backwaters around Wairarapa Lake. Seventy pheasants were liberated in the South Wairarapa. The birds liberated last year have increased at Martinborough

Norman, proprietor of the ,Solway Poultry Farm, High Street, Masterton, advertises that his day-old chicks will be ready from August 1 until October 31. The incubator capacity at the farm has now been increased to 7000 eggs, which has been necessitated by the increasing demand for these sturdy day-old chicks. Mr. Norman states that his new 4000-egg cabinet incubator is the most up-to-date in the Dominion and h e cordially invites inspection.
