AN EVEN FIGHT.

i BYRNE BEATS COOK OVER TEN ROUNDS. DECISION UNPOPULAR WITH SPECTATORS. (Received Wednesday, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 2. Cook and Byrne met in a ten-round bout and after a willing but comparatively even fight the verdict went to Byrne (an American). The first round was evenly contested. The second and third went in Cook's favour. In the fifth Byrne became decidedly aggressive, finishing by landing two rights to Cook’s jaw. Cook still maintained an advantage by winning the fifth delivering heavy punches to Byrne’s head and body. The next two rounds were characterised by hard, even fighting From this bout. Byrne began to display his superiority and carried all before him. The tenth round saw both men fighting hard. Each landed heavily with lefts to the body, Cook put a left to the head, while Byrne staggered him with rights and lefts to the head, then hard 1 rights and lefts to the body. Cook missed an uppercut as the bell rang, giving Byrne the round. The crowd booed the decision, although in the opinion of sports’ writers Byrne’s whirlwind finish in the last round easily overcame the Australian’s early lead. Cook started furiously, carrying the fight to the American in the first three rounds but seemed unable to maintain his pace.—(Australian Press Association.)
