TERRIFIC DAMAGE.
KARAMEA DISTRICT SUITERS MOST SEVERELY. HIGH MOUNTAIN SPLIT ASUNDER WESTPORT, July 3. A resident of Mokihinui, in which part of the Buller district all the four fatalities occurred, says that Mokihinui sustained as severe a shock as Murchison. The earthquake split Mount Glasgow from top to bottom, one portion being thrown right over the river. Mr. C. F. Shadick, Buller County Engineer, wires from Karamea: "Main Highway from Tobin’s Bridge to Stuart’s Mill, approximately 20 miles, is obliterated. Damage is terrific. It is not possible to construct road inland. Only possible route is along coast. It is impossible to restore telephonic communication inland. Damage to roads and bridges at Karamea is enormous." —(P.A.) (Mount Glasgow is 4800 feet in height.)
