OBITUARY.
" MB. RICHARD TANKERSLEY. An old and highly esteemed settler of the Wairarapa, Mr. Richard Tankers ley, died at his residence, Johnstone Street, Masterton, on Saturday. The Mr. Tankersley’s father came out <rom England in the ship Tory, and his mother in the Aurora, both arriving in Wellington about January, 1840. They were married on Christmas Day in the year 1840 in Wellington, by the Rev. Mr. Butler. The late Mr. Tankersley was born in 1847. His parents came to the Wairarapa after the big earthquake of 1855, crossing the Rimutakas on foot, and settled at Upper Plain. The late Mr. Tankersley married a daughter of the late Mr. Stephen Prentice. For 45 years he worked his farm in the Upper Opaki district, retiring to live in Masterton 15 years ago. He was a man of kindly disposition, respected by all, a man whose word was; his bond. -For many years he was chairman of the Opaki School Committee, and later of the Matahiwi School Committee. He is survived by a widow, two sons, Messrs. Stephen, Maand Roy, Carterton; four daughters. Mesdames J. Cotter, Carterton; W. Cooke. Nelson, and the Misses Sarah and Iris Tankersley, Masterton. His only surviving sister is Mrs J. W. Harding, of Rotorua. The funeral will leave Mr. Tankersley’s late residence, John- , stone Street, at 3 p.m. to-day for the Masterton Cemetery.
