SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.

(“The Age” Special.) On Tuesday last, at the residence of Mrs. L. J. Harding, South Carterton, a very enjoyable afternoon was spent to farewell Mrs. W. A. Laing, who is leaving for England to visit her parents, and on her return will reside at Opunake. A dainty afternoon tea was served, and during the proceedings, the Rev. W. Raine, on behalf of those assembled, presented Mrs. Laing with a handsome leather handbag. He expressed sincere regret at losing one who had made herself so well esteemd, and wishd her a happy journey and a safe return. In reply, Mrs. Laing, in thanking all for their good wishes and present, said it was with great regret that she left so many good friends. Belvedere Dance. The opening danee of the season in the Belvedere Hall' on Wednesday evening was well patronised, visitors' being present from Masterton, Greytown, Carterton and the surrounding districts. The music was provided by Morris’ Orchestra, extras being played by Messrs. Minifie, D. Te Tau and 8. Te Tau, while Mr. D. H. Jensen carried out the duties of M.C. The committee provided a dainty supper. Building Society. At a meeting of shareholders of the No. 1 Group of the Wairarapa Termin’ ating Building Society on Wednesday, evening, at Carterton, an appropriation of £3OO was disposed of by ballot, Mr J. Dwane, of Carterton, being the sue eessful shareholder.

FEATHERSTON. Mr. C. J. Nix (Featherston) returned from Sydney by the Ulimaroa on Wednesday. Miniature Rifle Club. The newly-formed South Featherston Miniature Rifle Club hopes to hold its opening ceremony on April 4, when visitors from the surrounding districts are expected to be present. The erection of the butts is completed. Plunket Society. The secretary of the Plunket Society advises that the takings at the garden fete held at Longwood recently amounted to £220 3s. 6d. to date, made up as follows:—Gates, £l4 Bs. 6d; pony rides, 3s; sweets, £4 14s. 2d; donations, £lO ss; pulling competition, £2 Is 6d; produce, —BB 3s 10d; bran tub, £5 10s; outside tea, £6 3s 7d; inside tea, £lO 10s; jumble stall, £ll 3s; cake stall, £l4 12s 8d; ice eream and soft drinks, £5O; gypsy, £2 7s 6d. There are still a few small donations to come in before the final result will be known. Amateur Athletic Club. A meeting of the Amateur Athletic Club was held on Tuesday night, Mr. G. A. Vincent presiding over a fair representation of members. After all accounts are paid the credit balance will be £23 16s sd. Mr. H. Perry (Martinborough) was elected a member. The secretary was instructed to forward letters of thanks to the following for donations:—Mrs J. Sharkey, Messrs. T. and W. Young, Levin & Co., Frozen Meat Co., Watson and Johnson, A. Tocker, W. J. Buck, Boy Donald. Mr F. W. 'Smith asked that a letter be forwarded to Mrs. G. A. Vincent, who at considerable inconvenience, had so willingly taken charge of the afternoon tea at the recent sports. . The president tendered his resignation, as ho would shortly he leaving the district.
