THE GRAMOPHONE AND ITS MUSIC The palm for instrumental virtuosity this month goes to Mischa Levitzki, who plays Rubinstein’s “Staccato , Study” and the Paganini-Liszt “CamranePa.” The Rubinstein is mere fireworks—but what a display! One’s principles as to putting purely musical values first weaken before isuch brilliance as this. The second number makes interesting comparison with the Baderewiski record recently issued. There is more subtlety ini the old master, but the fierce thrill of Levitzki leaves one breathless. (H.M.V., D 1489.) New Dance Discs. There is a fine assortment on the HM.V. March monthly list of the latest dance hits. Among these may be mentioned the fox-trots. “If You Don’t Love” (Hamp’s Serenaders), and “Just a Night for Meditation” (Shilkret’s Orchestra). EA4II; The Troubadours, in “When Love Gomes Stealing” (waltz), and “A Kiss Before the Dawn,” waltz (Ohatrand’s Love Theuyj ae used in “The Spider”) EA4IO. ’ A Fine Contralto. Esther Coleman (contralto), with orchestra, in “The Dear Homeland” (Slaughter) and “My Ain Folk” (Lemon), Zone. 5107. Two delightful old songs sung by our new contralto, who' must possess one of the finest voices amongst the younger school of to-day. For -sheer tonal richness and dept of expreission it is difficult to [ name h'er equal. Beautiful Waltzes. International Concert and Novelty Orchestra, in “Gold end Silver,” waltz (Lehar), and “Emperor,” waltz (Strauss), Zone. EF22. These two beautiful waltzes are well-known, and the pipe organ in Strausses “Emperor” considerably add to the sweetness of tone of the orchestra. Both orchestras are well-known, and need no introduction.
