BRITISH BY-ELECTIONS.
WORTH WATCHING FOB SIGNS & PORTENTS PARTIES EAGERLY INTENT LONDON, March. 17. Five by-elections this week are worth watching, in view.of the General Election. All are Conservative seats, the majorities being: East Toxteth, 9519; Eddisbury, 1669; Bath, 7267; North Lanark, 2028; Holland-with-Bos-ton, 4770. All the contests are threecornereds, except at Eddisbury, where it is a straight fight between Liberal and Conservative. The “Observer” says that a Government defeat at. East Toxteth, Bath, or Holland would be a gloomy portent to the General Flection. The Liberals ought to win Eddisbury if there is anything hke a Liberal revival, as to which there is so much speculation. Mr Lloyd George has been stumping the constituency. He addressed ten meetings in a day. North Lanark may be lost, as the Conservative candidate is ill. The feeling is widespread that some means ought to be found of avoiding a crop of by elections so near an appeal to tho country.—(Australian Press Association.)
