TOWN IMPROVEMENTS

BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY’S ACTIVITIES. i - - . ■' Il REPORT ON LAST TEAK’S WORK. I STREET PLANTING. “Owing to the freely given support of the public and the vigorous activities of our committee, the Society has again experienced a very successful year, and our open • spaces and streets are novz showing the results of the Society’s work,” states the annual report of the Masterton Beautifying Society, for the year ending December 31, 1928. “Visiters to the town make very favourable comment on the enhanced appearance of the streets -*■ that have been planted, and the improvements carried out in the Masterton Park are generally acclaimed. “A further <l5 chains of streets on the east side of the borough were planted last season and the usual maintenance work was carried out. The trees generally are responding well to the care and cultivation given them. “The fine show of blooms in the rose garden was a great credit to the Park Custodian, Mr. Horton, and was much admired generally. The climbers are gradually rising on the pergola and in a year or two should make a striking mass of colour. A sundial of artistic design in Oamaru stone has now been placed in the central plot of the garden. In connection with this garden ornament, the Society’s thanks are due to Messrs. Hoar and Sons, monumental masons, for a very generous donation. PARK IMPROVEMENTS. *‘ The rhododendron walk has now been completed and will undoubtedly be one of the features of the Park. A. space between this walk and the native | border has been stumped, ploughed and cultivated in readiness for a planting scheme next season. "The society, in conjunction with other interested bodies, had a system of flood lighting for the sports oval installed during the year. This has proved of great assistance to the Athletic Club and to bodies holding night functions, in the park, and brings Masterton in line with other centres in this respect. “Over 100 carefully selected and well grown trees have been planted on the main island in the lake and should make a big improvement later on. It is confidently anticipated that these trees will make good growth. Out of the number planted only the very low proportion of six per cent, has required replacing. SOUTH PARK. “During the year this area has had the unremitting care of the gentleman who has taken such a practical interest in its development from its inception. The trees are showing the benefit of the attention given to them, many loads of etones have been removed, and a tile drain has been laid. It is intended to sow this area down in grass this ( autumn. CARNIVALS. "Two carnivals were held during the period under review, one in February, and the other in December. These . efforts returned over £7OO to the society’s funds. “The society’s thanks are extended to the Press, the Borough Council, which is ever willing to assist and cooperate with our work, the hon. auditors, Mesers. Low and Cunningham, and to all the many willing helpers who , are too numerous to be mentioned individually.—(Signed ) Archer Hosking, president. ”
