AT ARTHUR’S PASS
) BIG TUNNEL ESCAPES DAMAGE. TRAIN SERVICES RESUMED GORGE ROAD BLOCKED CHRISTCHURCH, March 12. f A careful examination of the s various tunnels along the Midland i line (including the Otira tunnel) ' shows that no damage has been sustained as the result of the earthquake. Repair gangs ■ that ‘ were working all day Sunday on the wrecked section of the line near the pass have restored matters sufficiently to allow of the normal running of the train service yesterday. The road through the Otira Gorge is blocked in several places with slips, and it will probably be some weeks before the pass is again available for traffic. The beauty of the famous Devil’s Punch Bowl waterfall at Arthur’s Pass has been marred as a result, of the earthquake. The whole of the bush at the top through which the water came has slipped down into the gully, which is now blocked with some 50 feet c debris.—lP.A.)
