SCOTLAND YARD
SCOPE OF THE IMPENDING INQUIRY. PROPOSAL BY LIBERAL MEMBER. SEARCHING INVESTIGATION DESIRED. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received Monday, 7.15 p.m.) LONDON, May 21. A Liberal member of the House of Commons, Mr. B. Hopkin Morris has tabled an amendment to the motion moved, by the Home Secretary (Sir W. Joynson-Hicks), deleting the words referring to the conduct of the prosecution and evidence in the Hyde Park case, thus limiting the inquiry strictly to the police action in taking the girl to Scotland Yard. A number of the Opposition fear that the matter of the interrogation of Scotland Yard may otherwise be obscured by a mass of details regarding the Hyde Park affair. Moreover, a public inquiry might prejudice criminal proceedings for perjury.—(Australian Press Association.— United Service.) ANOTHER ATTACK. CHARGES BY MRS. BROWNE. LONDON, May 20. Mrs. Browne, wife of one of the two men sentenced to death for the murder of Constable Gutteridge, in a startling letter to Reynold’s “Sunday News” in reference to the Savage case, states that the day following Browne’s arrest Scotland Yard officers took her to the station at 10.30 in the morning and she remained till 7 at night. She was questioned hour after hour with nothing to eat or drink., Her child, who accompanied her, cried bitterly: “Mummy, can’t I have something to eat?” and the police then provided tea and rough sandwiches. Mrs. Browne alleges that the questioning did not cease, the police saying that she must be aware of her husband’s movements and what ho was doing. She was tired and worn out when allowed to go, and might have said anything when so fatigued.—(Australian Press Association. —United Service.)
