THE WOOL MARKET

FIRST SALE OF CRUTCHINGS. WELLINGTON SERIES. STRONG OVERSEAS COMPETITION ("The Age” Special.) WELLINGTON, June 14. The first crutching sale of the Wellington series was held to-day, when a total catalogue of 2146 bales was offered to a large and representative bench of buyers. The demands of oversea buyers prevailed, and local mil's found it difficult to fill their requirements within their own idea of values, the visiting buyers being strongly in the market for almost every description in the offering. LEVIN AND CO. Levin and Co., report: The first crutching sale of the season was held to-day. There were representatives of Bradford, the Continent, Canada, Japan, Australia, tho Dominion mills and fellmongers, all of whom competed freely for their various requirements, and the local scourers found it difficult to procure their needs owing to overseas buyers competing for all grades of crutchings. The total offering was 2146 bales, of which onr catalogue comprised 550 bales. We quitted the whole of our offering with the exception of a few bales of scoured pieces. Tho bulk of the catalogue comprised crutchings and there were several parcels of fleece wool, but there was not enough of the latter to warrant special quotation, or to give an idea of market prospects. There was a short supply of Merino and halfbred crutchings, which sold up to lljd. Super lots of crossbred erutehings met with keen competition, mainly from Japanese representatives and local mills, and these sold at from lOd to lid, and exceptional qualities occasionally higher; but the bulk of the offering, free from seed, sold at about B}d to lOd, while seedy and inferior sorts sold readily at 6d to Bjd. The range of prices was as follows: Merino crutchings .. ..
