Mr. D. Hebenton (Wellington) was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. Mr. W. J. McCulloch, Governmenf Instructor in Agriculture, is visiting Masterton. The death of Lady Stanley, widow of the African explorer, is reported in a cablegram from London. Miss L. Cocker has been appointed an assistant teacher at the MasteffWl West School.

The many friends of Mr. W. T. Richards, of Hogg Crescent, will regret to learn that he was admitted to the Masterton Hospital on Tuesday evening.

According to a London cablegram, Mr. Robert Hall, Queensland Rhodes scholar, has been appointed Lecturer in Economies at Trinity College, Oxford.

Mr. B. H. Williams, secretary of the Masterton A. and P. Association, who has been indisposed for the past week, hopes to resume duties about the middle of next week.

A Napier Press Association message states that the Hon. J. A. Young (Minister of Health), who entered the Waipukurau Hospital about a fortnight ago to undergo a slight operation, has recovered sufficiently to enable him to leave to-morrow for Wellington. It is reported from London that Sir Lionel Halsey, who commanded the battle-cruiser New Zealand in her first visit to this country, and later accompanied the Prince of Wales on his tour to this country and other parts of the Empire, has been promoted to be Admiral.

The Australian Press Association cor respondent in Paris states that Mr. Bruce and his party, taking advantage 6f perfect midsummerlike weaTher, motored to Fontainebleu on Tuesday, but in order to obtain a fpw days’ isolation and freedom from callers for preparation for the Imperial Conference, they are going to the country “somewhere in France.” The da’te for the crossing to London is not fixed. During the coming week-end, the Rev. T. Cooker- Brown, of the Lonlpn Missionary Society, will be visiting Masterton and will preach in the Congregational Church both morning and evening next Sunday. Mr. Brown comes from South China, and is able to speak with first-hand knowledge of the localities which have of late been the s :ene of serious troubles, and of the inhabitants of these localities.
