FOREST FIRES.
HAVOC WROUGHT IN CALIFORNIA SAN FRANCISCO, July 20.—Forest fires have been burning practically unchecked for several days in a dozen northern Californian counties, and have ravaged timber lands in or near five national forests. They have left a smoking trail through hundreds of acres of private lands. It is estimated that over 100,000 acres have now been burned. The historic mining town of Quartz has been destroyed, the neighbouring town of Stent partly destroyed, while the residents of Standard City, in the direct path of the flames, are reported to be fleeing with their possessions. Half-exhausted fire crews, totalling more than two thousand, are continuing their efforts to stem the spread of the flames, but the weather forecast of continued high temperature and low humidity gives little hope of a cessation for some days.—(A. ant N.Z.)
