The rise of the Meuse converted the streets of, Mezieres into rushing torrents. PLAYING FIELDS WASHED AWAY (Received Tuesday, 8.25 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 4.—After a rise of nine inches during the night the Thames to-day is still rising. Hun« dreds of acres of farm lands are submerged between Cleeve and Shiplake. A number of playing fields disappeared, including parts of Eton. The rivers Kennet and Loddon overran their banks and the outlook is serious, more heavy rain being expected from the Atlantic. —(Reuter.) FLOODS IN QUEENSLAND. THREE MEN DROWNED. (Received Tuesday, 8.25 p.m.) BRISBANE, Jan. s.—Heavy, rains caused widespread floods. Three men were drowned in swollen creeks.
