ASSAULT AND THEFT.
CHASE ACROSS CQUNTRY. MAORI STAR IN OTAHUHU MOVIE SCENE. AUCKLAND, Jaji. s.—After following' a man whom he had seen displaying bank notes to the value of £42 in a hotel at Otahuhu, on Monday, a Maori, Toe Pere, made a sudden at tack and decamped with the money. The owner was proceeding along Princes street when the Maori overtook him and engaged him in conversation. \ Pere then made a swift grab at the man’s waistcoat and secund the notes. A hue and cry was raised and Pere was pursiied across* country until he disappeared. An hour later Constable Pollard was riding a bicycle in Panmure road when he saw a hatless Maori board a ’bus for the city. The constable gave chase, and after furious pedalling he caught up with the ’bus. The Maori had then only £l7 in his possession, and would not admit that there was any more in ihe roll he had seized. When charged With theft the Maori pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.— (P.A.)
