A cable announces the death of Queen Margherita, the Italian Queen Mother. Mr H. Zeisler (Wanganui), manager of the N.Z. Refrigerating Co., was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. The illness of the Italian Queen Mother hat taken a grave turn, due to a brain attack, and her condition is critical. Dr and Mrs N. H. Prior (Perry street) are on a vigjt to Auckland. Dr. R. J. MaunseU, of Dunedin, is acting as locum tenons for Dr. Prior. Dr. J. A. Cowie and Dr. Helen Cowie are at present on holiday in Dunedin. Dr. J. Twigg, recedfly ef the Palmerston North Hospital, is acting as locum tenons. Mr L. F. Henry, of the Mastertnn Supreme Court staff, has been transferred to the Magistrate’s Court at Marton. He has been succeeded at Masterton by Mr J. L. Wink, of Wellington. Air W. M. O’Connor, headmaster of Waihi School, has been appointed headmaster of the Pahiatua District High School. Mr O’Connor has had 21 years’ teaching service in the Auckland district and has been years in his present iiositicn. Mr J. T. Williams, who has been postmaster at Masterton for the last 18 months and who has retired on superannuation, has left to reside in Auckland. His successor, Air J. W. McLean, has commenced duty at Alaeterton. Sir Douglas Mawson arrived at Auckland yesterday from Sydney. He will investigate forestry prospects io the Dominion.’ Sir Herbert Afatthewa, an English agricultural expert, also arrived on a forestry mission. He is acting as trustee for several English business men. The death occurred in Pahiatua on Saturday morning of Mrs Emma Schofield, of Konini, at age of 66 years. The late Mrs Schofield had been a sufferer from Heart trouble. She had lived over 40 years at Konini, being one of the very earliest arrivals tl.ere from Wellington. She had the distinction of being one of the very first women to settle at Konini. She leaves three sons, one of frhom, Foster, lives at Konini and the other two—Walter and Eaton—at Hamilton (Waikato) and Mrs Newell (Palmerston North), while deceased’s brothers are Messrs*. W. and F. Brit land.
