THE Wairarapa Age MOBBING DAILY. MONDAY, MARCH 23,-1925. WORK FOR THE COUNCIL.

When the new Borough Council takes office in April we trust it will find time to look into the naming of the streets and the- numbering of the houses. Masterton has a good deal to be thankful for, including a certain amount of public spirit, for which it does not often get credit, but which is more and more evident year by year in the beautifying of the streets and of the private properties of its citizens. After all, it is not necessary to make all beautiful gardens available for citizens to play in. The mere fact of beautifying one’s own grounds and leaving them visible from the streets is a public service, and a service from which Masterton has already profited much. One of the drawbacks of the borough is the awkward and unwieldy lay-out of the town, when it was first planned. There is not, a more clumsy and inconvenient town plan in New Zealand than that of Masterton. But that is a thing of the past and we must make the best of it. The present Council has taken some steps to improve matters by, acquiring the land for a through street between Cole and Essex streets. The new Council should make it one of its first duties to construct this street, and its next to cany the thoroughfare right through to Renall street. Another matter that urgently needs attention is the numbering of the houses. There are quite a number of streets which, are not numbered at ail, and others in which many new houses have been erected without numbers, making it most difficult for visiters and even local residents to find their way to an address. Another matter is the naming of the streets. For one reason or another some streets change their names in odd places, e.g., Hall street and Lincoln road; Pine street and Perry street. It would be a great convenience if these could bo adjusted so that anybody would know where one street began arid the other ended. Then there is tire matter of districts. Does anyone know the boundaries of Solway or of Kuripuni or of Manaial Portions of these are within and portions without the borough. - They are very vague designations sometimes applied in one quarter and sometimes in another. The new Council, while it has the energy anti enthusiasm of youth, might ask one of its committees to look into these matters and get some finality about them.
