SOUTHS WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (“The Age” Special.) Incipient Tire. The grass along the railway line in the vicinity of the Cartarton showgrounds became ignited yesterday afternoon. The Greytown Horticultural 'Society will hold its autumn show tomorrow, and indications point to a successful exhibition. This enterprising society was established in 1876, and has maintained interest in ,its affairs ever since. In those days the subscription was a guinea, to-day it is only 2/6, and the membership stands at 160.

Ritual Competition. The members of the Carterton Druids' Lodge held a ritual competition on Monday evening between present and past officers, the judges giving their decision in favour of the present officers by 196 votes to 177. The competition was a preliminary for the officers who arc defending the ritual shield against the Stonehenge Lodge. The judges were D. P. Bro. E. Newland (Stonehenge), P. D. P. Bro. P. A. Milne (Taumarunui) and Bro. Matthews (Hawera). ALFREDTON. (Our Own Correspondent.) Last week-end the Alfredton tennis team journeyed to Tiraumea to play a return match, which they won by 12 games to 7. Much credit is due to the Tiraumea ladles for the most hospitable manner in which they entertained the visitors.

A meeting of the Alfredton branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Friday. Mr James Watson, the organising secretary, addressed the meeting and dealt with various matters concerning the Union. This was the new secretary’s first visit to this district, and his address gave confidence to the members with which to tackle the work of the Union. A very hearty expression of thanks was accorded Mr Watson for his address.
