NO POWER TO VETO.

ABSOLUTE DAIRY CONTROL.

ATTOBNEY-GENERAL’S OPINION

WELLINGTON, March 16.—“ The fact is that the Government has no power, right or authority to dictate to the Board or to interfere in any manner with the Board in the exercise of the Board’s discretion.” Sueh is the considered opinion of the AttorneyGeneral issued for publication by the Minister of Agriculture, regarding the assumption by the Dairy Produce Export Control Board of full powers of control under the Act of 1923.

By a poll, added Sir Francis’ Bell, the producers decided that the Act should come into force and the producers had nine representatives on the Board to the Government’s two. Section 13 of the Act gave the Board full power to determine the extent of control of the industry, and it was not agreeable that the Government had any authority or discretion in the matter.

Notice by the Board of the introduction of absolute control took immediate effect without any Order-in Council.

Mr Bennett, President of the Chamber of Commerce, asked to comment, said: “The sheet anchor of commercial hopes is gone. It moans the death knell of commercial interests in this connection. ’ ’ —(P.A.)
