WHATMAN STREET.
A BENEFACTOR HONOURED. Appreciative recognition of p'nbHe Service was unanimously agreed upon by the Borough Council last evening when the Mayor (Mr Pragnell) moved that as a mark of appreciation for the generous action of Mr A. P. Whatman in giving the orphanage to The Salvation Army, the Council request the Masterton County Council to have the name of Ngaumutawa road, the boundary between the Borough and County, changed to Whatman street. Mr Pragnell mentioned that ho had had the privilege of inspecting the fine institution which had been erected, furnished and endowed by Mr Whatman at a big expense, for the splendid service of providing for little children. He was one of those men whom, as citizens, they should honour, and let him see that they were with him.
Cr. Lamb said he knew that Mr Whatman objected to any limelight, but he was one of the public-spirited men to whom great honour was due. He was doing this work while he was alive, and too much credit eould not be given him.
