The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated Dee. 13, from the High Commissioner:— Butter. Market quiet, but steady; inquiry for spot supplies. New Zealand: Finest, sailed 204/ to 20ft./ (1/OJd, 1/10); unsalted 212/ to 216/ (1/107, 1/11); other qualities, 180/ to 192/ (1/74, 1/84). Australian: Finest, salted 186/ to 190/ (1/7J, 1/8J); unsalted, 188/ to 190/, up to 194/ (1/8, 1/81); other qualities, salted 160/ to 184/ (1/5, 1/74), unsalted 160/ to 186/( 1/5, 1/72). Argentine: 170’/ to 180/ (1/62, 1/74); other qualities, 160/ to 174/ (1/5, 1/64). Danish: 242/ to 244/ (2/2, 2/2J), Cheese. Market firm with improved demand and stocks available for Christmas are small. English: Finest farmers’, 116/ to 120/ (1/04, 1/04). Canadian: Coloured ami white 96/ (lOJrl), exceptional 98/ (lOld). New Zealand: Coloured 92/ to 94/ (9Jd, lOd), white 94/ to 96/ (Mid, 10id). Australian: Coloured 90/ to 92/ (9Jd, 9|<l). Wool. Sale closed Friday instead of Wednesday on account of fog. Demand good from Home and Continental buyers, but frequent withdrawals of merino occurred on account of holders’ high limit. From total offerings of 139,000 bales, approximately 115,000 were sold. Average closing rates were:—6o/64 (merino) 2/8 to 3/3, 56 (super halfbred) 2/8 to 3/1, 48 (fine sbd) 2/1 to 2/5, 44/46 (medium xbd) 2/ to 2/4, 36/40 (coarse xbd) 1/10 to 2/1.
