DISTRICT NEWS.

SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.

(Our Travelling Reporter.)

A New Business. Converted from an abandoned building into an up-to-date butcher’s shop, Haigh’s old promises in Greytown give promise of seeing out another halfcentury of usefulness. Built of heart of totara, the main portion of the building required only minor repairs, but concrete has replaced timber in essential parts at the base. The main shop is tiled and well ventilated, with electric fans. With these favourable conditions, and stocking only the primest meat, Deller’s Meat Mart should command its share of public patronage. Harvesting. All available labour is now' engaged harvesting, which is fairly general throughout the Wairarapa. While a good area is under oats there is a surprising absence of wheat. There is promise of a good yield from oats, though many of the heavier crops are down as a result of the week-end rain. Leaving. Mr and Mrs James Anderson, the popular master and matron of Carter’s Home for aged men, at Carterton, have tendered their resignations owing to the ill-health of Mrs Anderson. Successful Concert.

The pupils of the Carterton Convent School gave their annual concert in the Tivoli Theatre on Monday evening to a large and appreciative audience. Personal.

Word has been received in Carterton of the death at Greymouth of Mr William Lindop, youngest brother of Mr W. J. Lindop, of Victoria street, leaving a widow and one son. He resided in this district some years back.
