CARTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

(Our Travelling Reporter.)

The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. Fisher) and Crs. T. H. Hughes, G. Hughan, J. Freddy, Jl W. Churchouse, E. Eagle, A. M. Broadbent and T. S. Arcus. The balance sheet showed a cr. balance of £1779 14s lOd on general account and £763 10s 2d on gas account. Accounts totalling £475 8s 3d were passed. The Municipal Band notified the resignation of the bandmaster and secretary. The Municipal Association solicitor gave an opinion that the Council was entitled to refund only for 6 years back rates paid by J. J. Knoxr-Smith in ignorance. Mr Smith has paid £4O 3s 4d on a section that does not exist, and he is accordingly entitled to a refund of about £ll. The School Site.

The Wellington Education Board notified that it was applying for a transfer of the Holloway street reserve.

Cr. Broadbent moved that the Council, if it has the power, transfer the whole of the reserve except an area required for a roadway. Cr. Freddy moved an amendment that only an equal area of Fensham’s section be transferred.

The amendment was lost, and the motion carried.

On the recommendation of the gas committee the price of tar to the Council was raised from 6d to 9d per gallon.

It was decided to inform the Memorial Committee that its caretaker must observe the general rule for the use of sprinklers. The Tivoli Picture Company was granted permission to exhibit suitable pictures on Christmas night.

It was left to the baths committee to arrange with the Swimming Club for the installation of electric light at the baths.
