Mr and Mrs C. J. Beard, who have been visiting New Plymouth to bo present at their son’s wedding, returned to Greytown on Saturday. Mr Holland, M.P.,- leader of the Labour Party, stopped- at Devonshire House while in Masterton. He leaves this morning for Wellington and will go on to-night to Greymouth. Mr B. Larsen, of Havelock, formerly secretary to the old Pelorus Bead Board and Akitio County Council, has been appointed clerk to the Takaka County Council. Mr C. E. Daniell intimated at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust that he would not be a candidate for re-election on May 29. Several members expressed the opinion that Mr Daniell’s services were very valuable to the Trust, and that ho should he urged to reconsider his decision. Mr W. T. Grundy, who is leaving very soon for England, tendered hia resignation to the Masterton Trust Lands Trust last evening. In moving that tho resignation be accepted with regret,- the chairman (Mr A. Rippun) said that the Trust was losing as member and as chairman of the education committee one who had had the interests of education at heart for very many years. An opinion, endorsed by all the other members present, was that the district, the town and the Trust were losing, for, it was hoped, a short time only, a man whose place it was going to be veiy hard to fill Mr W. J. Jackson, of the telegraph operating staff of the Masterton P. and T. Department, has received notice of his promotion to postmaster at Ormondvillc. Mr Jackson, who joined the department 23 years ago, spent the majority of his service at Masterton, being transferred back to this office on two occasions from other towns. During his residence in Masterton he established himself as a popular, efficient and courteous officer, and his departure will be a loss to the local service. As a sport Mr Jackson was closely identified with the hockey game, playing for P. and T. when they were the star team of the competition, while his performance on the cricket field was also one of merit. Since the introduction of Association football, Mr Jackson has been closely connected with its administration, and this season held the secretaryship of the Wairarapa executive.
