In reply to representations made recently by the executive of the Wairarapa Farmers’ Union, asking for more stringent regulations to prevent foot and mouth disease getting a hold among the stock of the Dominion, the secretary of the Farmers’ Union has received the following from the acting Director-General of Agriculture.

*‘l beg to assure your Union that every precaution is being taken to prevent the introduction of foot and mouth disease into the Dominion. As a special protection regulations were recently made: (a) Prohibiting th 0 introduction of oats, barley, maize, hay, straw and chaff from the United States of America, in view of the outbreak there, and (b) providing for the destruction of all hay, straw, or chaff packing accompanying goods imported from Great Britain, Ireland, the Continent of Europe and the United States.

“The destruction of packing material is not required in the case of Great Britain when the packages arc accompanied by a sworn certificate or statutory declaration to the effect that the hay, straw, or chaff used has been properly disinfected prior to its use.”
